During the summer months, the Corfu Free Library will be sharing information about the people from Pembroke who accomplished things that may surprise many of us. This week we recognize ELY PARKER.

WEEK 10 - Ely Parker was a member of the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. His family lived near Indian Falls. His father, William, fought with the United States in the War of 1812. He attended Yates Academy in Orleans County when he showed a strong interest and ambition to learn to some missionaries. He then attended Cayuga Academy in Aurora. Ely went on to study law and passed the bar, but was not admitted because he was an Indian. He went to RPI to study Engineering and while working as an engineer, he met Ulysses S. Grant in Illinois when he came to his aid in a bar fight. Ely became a Civil War officer, met Pres. Lincoln and helped write Gen. Lee’s Terms of Surrender at Appomattox. Ely eventually became the U. S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ELY PARKER at our SEPTEMBER 23 PROGRAM by TERRY ABRAMS at 6:30 at the Corfu Free Library - More Info to Come!
